Highlights from Galaxy Unpacked 2017
Samsung and plenty of Galaxy Note fans gathered in New York City today for Galaxy Unpacked, the official announcement of the line’s flagship Galaxy Note8 smartphone. Here’s our recap on highlights and features of the new Note8 you should take note (pun intended) of.
6.3-Inch Infinity Display – Undoubtedly, one of Note8’s biggest (literally) features is its screen. At 6.3 inches, the screen is the largest of any Samsung Galaxy device.
Featuring the Galaxy Note’s popular curved edges and rounded corners, the Note8’s cinematic screen lets users see and do more, without bezels, sensors or camera lenses getting in the way. Four colors will be available: Midnight Black, Orchid Grey, Maple Gold, and Deep Sea Blue.
Dual Back Cameras – Yes, Samsung is late to the dual-camera game, but the technology housed in the Note8’s offering is pretty unique.
The dual back cameras feature 12-megapixel sensors, with one of the cameras featuring a telephoto lens with two-times optical zoom and the other featuring a wide angle. These cameras work together to create crisper, clearer pictures, utilizing optical image stabilization to produce great images even when you’re on the move.
The live demo placed particular emphasis on the Note8’s Live Focus feature, which allows users to adjust background blur to create the depth of field typically only possible in high-end cameras.
The S Pen: Better and Smarter Than Ever – The S Pen, inarguably the Note’s most distinguishing feature, gets some nice improvements as well.
The latest iteration is waterproof, never needs to be charged, and features a finer tip for more precise drawing, notetaking and more.
We were super-impressed with the Note8’s Screen Off Memo feature, which allows users to add up to 100 pages of S Pen-written notes without activating the screen or opening an app.
The new S Pen also translates foreign languages (including currency and measurement conversion) by simply highlighting the text you want to translate, and your chosen language will appear on the screen.
Security! – Note8 brings it’s A game with Samsung Knox and an impressive suite of biometric security measures. Facial recognition, iris scanning, or fingerprint scanning can be used to lock and unlock your Note8, in addition to the venerable 9-dot unlock screen.
Impressive Storage, Capabilities, and Other Notable Features – Other capabilities of the Galaxy Note8 include the device’s increased storage and RAM and the Multi-View window.
The Multi-View window allows Note8 users to view two separate apps at once, with no need to switch between them. Multi-View is bolstered by Samsung’s App Pair, which allows users to create short-cuts to their most used combinations of apps with just one touch.
As far as storage goes, the Galaxy Note8 offers 6GB RAM, a micro-SD card slot and 64 GB of storage on board the base model. The Note8 also offers USB-C and wireless charging (with wireless charge sold separately) and a 3300 mAh battery.
The Galaxy Note8 ships with a pair of AKG-tuned headphones that plug into the device’s standard headphone jack.
All of this is packaged in a handset that is rated IP 68 against water and dust.
All in all, we think the Note8 will live up to its promise to let its users “Do Bigger Things.”
