Griffin Buzz

I’ve written before about the history of the tablet, it’s a fascinating topic.

NPR’s Technology Podcast today features several incredible stories about the future and the history of touch-computing. It covers everything from early tablets in film and television, to how we use tablets like iPad in schools and hospitals today. You can hear the full story here.

Mike McSherry and Bill Buxton believe that the future of technology will change our lives in four ways:

  1. Gesture Technology
  2. Personal Profile Models
  3. The Cloud
  4. True Window Shopping

What do you think of their predictions for the the future of technology?

Are your local schools and hospitals using iPads yet?

History of the tabletPeter Kafka recently wrote a great post on All Things Digital about the adoption of tablet devices and how it has effected the newspaper industry. The post is entitled Here’s What an iPad Looked Like in 1994.

What’s incredible is how far the tablet has come over the years. While many of us think of iPad when we think of tablets, we can see that this concept has been around since 1988. Check out the infograph by Simplify360.

While this 1994 video looks at the digital future of newspapers, it’s especially interesting to see a working tablet from 17 years ago.

What was your first tablet device? What do you have now?

Aug 3, 2011 iPad Head Girl

It’s a lovely day for a walk in the park, especially if you have a head full of iPads! We came across this crazy video on Ubergizmo and had to share it with you.

Watch as iPad Head Girl takes a stroll and reads her book in New York City’s Bryant Park. At first it appears that it’s a hidden camera comedy show, but Edwin Kee’s original blog post shares what it’s really all about.

Click to make it biggerI posted recently about how to quickly mute your iPad, especially late at night. One annoyance about using my iPad at night is having to go into the settings to adjust the brightness.

Lo and behold, one of our awesome readers submitted the solution! Josh Velasquez writes:

Before multitasking was introduced to iPad, you would have to switch to the Settings app to change the iPad’s brightness. Now, you can do this (and more) from the multitasking bar.

1. Press the iPad’s Home button twice (quickly, like double-clicking a mouse) to reveal the multitasking bar at the bottom of the screen.
2. Swipe toward the right along the multitasking bar to move the app icons off the screen.
3. These iPad controls will appear (from left to right):
- mute button or orientation lock button, depending on how your iPad’s Side Switch is configured.
- brightness slider
- audio control buttons (previous, play/pause, next, and sometimes AirPlay)
- volume slider
- icon for the last audio app you used (probably iPod)
4. To adjust the brightness, touch and drag the little knob on the brightness slider left or right.

Thanks for the tip Josh. We’ll be sending you a little something for your time. Cheers!
