iTrip | The first FM transmitter
Back in 2003 we invented the first iTrip (pictured to the right). Our little FM transmitter set an entire industry of iPod accessories into motion.

There’s been a few updated versions of iTrip over the years, each with it’s own set of cool new features.

Now, six years later, we are excited to be announcing the release of the all new iTrip, fully integrated with its new iTrip Controller app – the most advanced iTrip yet!

All new iTrip

Here’s what’s included:

• Broadcasts music, podcasts and audio books to any nearby FM radio
• Displays track and artist information on RDS-compatible radios.
• Backlit graphic LCD display is easy to read in any light
• Large menu button allows easy fingertip navigation of menus
• Griffin’s SmartScan technology automates setup and operation by instantly finding the best available frequency in any locale
• Users can save up to 3 presets for easy recall
• Choose between stereo and mono transmission for best signal
• Toggle SmartSound EQ adjustment on or off
• Transport controls allow track changes directly from the iTrip and return tactile button feedback to iPhone and iPod touch
• Micro-USB port for charging any USB-powered iPod or iPhone from any compatible charger, including Griffin’s classic PowerBlock or PowerJolt

iTrip, $49.99, is available now at major retailers and at www.griffintechnology.com. iTrip Controller is now available as a free download from the iTunes App store.

I've got an iPhone. How do you power/charge it when using this new iTrip since it will be using the port on the bottom? Also, is this a "Made for iPhone" device?
  • You can charge the iPhone through the micro USB connector. Yes, it's
    "Made for iPhone".
    Thanks for the questions.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Any of the Griffen products work with the micro USB connector? From a quick-glance all the Griffen products were based off the iPhone port. I'd definitely considering this product if there was an easy charging solution.
  • Hi Franky,
I'm afraid I don't fully understand your question. Will you please
contact our support@griffintechnology.com department? You can also
    call them at 615.399.7000.

    Sorry I'm not more help.

How to you power/charge an iPhone when using this? Also, is it a "Made for iPhone" device or one where you get the error that it isn't a "Made for iPhone device"?
  • You'll need a USB Micro-B cable (available separately) to charge the device. Yes, it is Made for iPhone and compatible with all versions listed at the bottom of the product page: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/itrip

    Hope this helps.

I know this is a company blog, but what is the sound quality like? Would I be able to listen to phone/ accept phone calls through this? And does the iTrip controller app have to be open to use the itrip; ie if I wanted to listen to music through the Pandora app, could I have the Pandora app open instead of the itrip controller app? Thanks for any help!
    -Matthew.
  • Hi Matthew,

    Thanks for your questions.

The sound quality will sound as good as any FM radio station.

You can listen to phone calls through the iTrip. When a phone call
comes in, you will hear the ringing come through the iTrip. However,
once you answer the call, you will hear your voice and the other
person's voice come through the phone normally, and not through the
radio. The other person's voice will come through the iPhone's speaker
as it does normally. So, your iPhone will behave as it would if
nothing were connected. You do not need to remove the iTrip at any
    time to answer the call.

To listen to apps like Pandora you will need to first play a song from
the "iPod" of your iPhone to activate the iTrip. You can then back out
of the iPod mode and use an app like Pandora and the audio should come
through with no problems. You never HAVE to use the iTrip app. As long
as you play some music from the iPod section of the iPhone, that will
    activate the iTrip hardware.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Any idea which retailers in Canada have the new iTrip. I've checked the Apple Store in Toronto and some of the other major retailers, and none of them have it.
  • Try BestBuy or Future Shop. Please let me know if you have any trouble.

    Thanks.
  • So, am I correct in my understanding that you have to have a completely different/separate type of charger (mini usb) to be able to charge the phone while using the iTrip? If that's the case, that's the one thing that'll keep me from buying one. I have enough device chargers to keep up with already.
  • Hi Ryan,
Yes, you'll need to purchase a Micro-USB-B cable to charge your
device. The cable is not included.
    I hope that helps.

The itrip won't turn on why i use another app (like the ESPN radio app or wunder radio app).
  • Thanks Darnell. It should work.
Please contact us at support@griffintechnology.com, so we can walk you
    through it.

    Thanks,
    Dave
  • Darnell,
Please be sure you're playing the app FIRST, before you switch on the
    iTrip.
So, in this order, plug in the iTrip, play some music from the iPod/
iPhone until you hear that music over the radio, then stop the music
and play something from the App.

If you're still having trouble please contact support.

    Cheers,
    Dave

With the iTrip app and an older version of an iTrip SmartScan, do they still work together? I just bought a Touch and am heading on a roadtrip round NZ this weekend so want to make the most of the technology.
  • Unfortunately, the app is only compatible with new our new iTrip.
Have a safe and fun road trip.
  • adrianturner
Thanks Dave. Do you where in New Zealand I can buy a new one?
  • Hi Adrian,
Our retailers in New Zealand can be found here: http://www.griffintechnology.com/about/dealers/...
    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Sorry Dave, just been to all of those websites and none them show the latest iTrip and some no iTrips at all. Can you find out if any have been shipped and where to please?
  • Hi Adrian,
I investigated further. It turns out that FM transmitters are illegal
in New Zealand, so we don't ship them there. There are some you can
find, but they are much lower powered than ours, so I expect those
    meet guidelines.
Do you have a cassette or AUX-in? We have solutions to play your iPod
    or iPhone that way.
  • George
Does this iTrip broadcast calls our just music? Thanks
  • It only broadcasts music. Thanks.
