Never underestimate the power of a classic game of "20 Questions". It's been a staple for my convention-going trips. Best moment so far:

"Is it bigger than a breadbox?"
"No."
"Is it SMALLER than a breadbox?"
"No..."
"IS IT AN EFFING BREADBOX?!?!"
"Yes."

Oh these are great tips! Thanks so much.
8,000+ kilometres is huge! Wow. You're brave to do that with kids too :D

You sound like the perfect candidate for MyPhones. Sorry if that came
across pushy, it wasn't meant to be. I'm planning to use them with my
wee ones on the road this Spring.

My family does an 8000+ km road trip every summer through the USA. It's lots of fun! Make sure to break up the driving a bit though, and give yourself lots of time.

Pack lots of entertainment (music, portable DVD players, cards, etc), and make sure to load up on lots of healthy snacks and drinks to keep you from stopping at fast food places. Take a ball or frisbee so that you guys can get out and run around a bit to stretch your legs.

If you have your route planned, it's a good idea to check out the hotels in the places where you'd like to stop so you have an idea of where you might want to bunk for the night. Take advantage of a good hotel breakfast bar!

For more tips, here's some links to articles I've written on the subject...

http://cookienotestravel.blogspot.com/2009/03/s...

http://cookienotestravel.blogspot.com/2009/03/s...
